Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) technology uses small and cost-effective sensors for various applications, such as Industrial IoT. However, these sensor nodes are powered by fixed-size batteries, which creates a trade-off between network performance and long-term sustainability. Moreover, some applications require the network to provide a certain level of service, such as a lower delay for critical data, while ensuring the operational reliability of sensor nodes. To address this energy challenge, external energy harvesting sources, such as solar and wind, offer promising and eco-friendly solutions. However, the available energy from a single energy source is insufficient to meet these requirements. This drives the utilization of a hybrid energy harvesting approach, such as the integration of solar and wind energy harvesters, to increase the amount of harvested energy. Nevertheless, to fully utilize the available energy, which is dynamic in nature, the sensor node must adapt its operation to ensure sustainable operation and enhanced network performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid energy harvesting-based energy neutral operation (ENO) medium access control (MAC) protocol, called HENO-MAC, that allows the receiver node to harvest energy from the solar-wind harvesters and adapt its duty cycle accordingly. The performance of the proposed HENO-MAC was evaluated using the latest realistic solar and wind data for two consecutive days in GreenCastalia. The simulation results demonstrate that the duty cycle mechanism of HENO-MAC effectively utilizes the harvested energy to achieve ENO and uses the available energy resources efficiently to reduce the packet delay for all packets and the highest priority packet by up to 28.5% and 27.3%, respectively, when compared with other existing MAC protocols., Comment: This paper has been accepted for presentation at the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC) 2024

25. Parameter Estimation of the Single-Dispersion Fractional Cole-Impedance Model With the Embedded Hardware

Abstract

Bioimpedance modeling with equivalent electrical circuits has an important role in various biomedical applications, as it facilitates understanding of underlying physical and electrochemical processes in applications such as body composition measurements and assessment of clinical conditions. However, the estimation of model parameter values is not a straightforward task, especially when complex circuits with fractional-order components [e.g., constant phase elements (CPEs)] are used. In this article, we propose a low-complexity method for parameter estimation of the Cole-impedance model suitable for low-cost embedded hardware (e.g., 8-bit microcontrollers). Our approach uses only the measured real and imaginary impedance, without any specific software package/toolbox, or initial values provided by the user. The proposed method was validated with synthetic (noiseless and noisy) data and experimental right-side, hand-to-foot bioimpedance data from a healthy adult participant. Moreover, the proposed method was compared in terms of accuracy with the recently published relevant work and commercial Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy software (Bioimp 2.3.4). The performance evaluation in terms of complexity (suitable for deployment for the microcontroller-based platform with 256 kB of RAM and 16 MHz clock speed), execution time (18 s for the dataset with 256 points), and cost (< $\$ $ 25) confirms the proposed method in regards to reliable bioimpedance processing using embedded hardware.

The sensor is designed as a parallel connection of a spiral inductor and an interdigitated capacitor and it was fabricated in a conductive layer using LTCC (Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) technology. The inderdigitated capacitor electrodes were coated with a thin film of bismuth doped barium titanate (Ba0.9Bi0.066TiO3), whose permittivity changes with temperature, which directly induces changes in the capacitance of the interdigitated capacitor and consequently changes the resonant frequency of the sensor. The measurements of S-parameter of the sensor were performed using a Vector Network Analyzer (E5071B, Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA, USA), whose port was connected to the antenna coil that was placed around the sensor in order to be able to wirelessly detect temperature, in the temperature range from 25 °C to 165 °C.
